Top Wild Games of 2010-2011: November 17, Anaheim Ducks

Ducks-Wild fightOver the course of 82 games, there are many "big" games and "important" ones. On November 17, the Anaheim Ducks travel to the Xcel Energy Center for what can be called an old-fashioned "rivalry" game. Outside of the division with Vancouver, Colorado, and Calgary, the Anaheim Ducks are the Minnesota Wild's biggest rival. Twice have the Anaheim Ducks knocked out the Minnesota Wild in the playoffs, in 2002-2003 and 2006-2007. Furthermore, in 2006-2007 there was some cheap shots taken at Minnesota, with enforcer Brad May punching Kim Johnsson and knocking him out of the playoffs. The atmosphere is always intense and the Ducks have some notable players in Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Bobby Ryan, and Teemu Selanne.

Top Wild Games of 2010-2011: October 28, Washington Capitals

Washington Capital star Alexander OvechkinOn October 28th, the Washington Capitals will visit the Xcel Energy Center. The Washington Capitals have one of the most exciting teams in the NHL, with Alexander Ovechkin, Mike Green, Nicklas Backstrom, and Alexander Semin on the roster. He was the MVP of the league 2 seasons ago and will most likely contend for it the next decade. The Minnesota Wild will have to play a sharp game to defeat the Capitals and can expect an intense atmosphere.

Top Wild Games of 2010-2011: October 30, Chicago Blackhawks

Andrew Brunette and a Chicago Blackhawk player tangled up The Chicago Blackhawks are the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Not long ago, the Blackhawks were a bottom cellar team with little publicity in the NHL. Well, that has all changed now. On October 30, the Chicago Blackhawks will battle against the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center.

With Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane up front, the Chicago Blackhawks have as much talent and depth at forward as anyone in the league. They also have Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith on defense. Minnesota will look at Chicago's model of rebuilding and hopefully someday attain the same success they have had. Martin Havlat and Cam Barker are two players on the Minnesota Wild that will be looking to factor in the game, as they are two former Chicago Blackhawks.

Top Wild Games of 2010-2011: November 20, New York Rangers

Former Minnesota Wild Captain Marian Gaborik Over the next few weeks, I will write about the games I am most looking forward to for the Minnesota Wild. The first game I will start off with is November 20 against the New York Rangers at the Xcel Energy Center. The New York Rangers are not the most glamorous team in the NHL, I get that. What this game does bring is two former Minnesota Wild fan favorites back to the Xcel. Marian Gaborik and Derek Boogaard were two of the most popular players for the Minnesota Wild at one point.

Until Marian Gaborik had his falling out with the staff and decided to sit out games because of injury, he was the consensus face of the franchise. Derek Boogaard was a crowd pleaser with fights and big hits right up until he entered free agency. The New York Rangers offered him a contract he could not refuse this offseason. For those reasons, I am looking forward to the New York Rangers at the Xcel Energy Center on November 20th.

2010-2011 Wild Season Approaching

Antii Miettinen skates in on a shootout
Okay, maybe the 2010-2011 NHL season isn't right around the corner but for Wild fans it feels pretty close. Even though the Chicago Blackhawks claimed Lord Stanley just two weeks ago, the Minnesota Wild have been finished since early April. The Wild will begin the NHL regular season on October 7th against the Carolina Hurricanes in Finland, which is only 105 days away for those of you counting at home. The team will be starting their preseason on September 15 in St. Louis against the Blues. However, there is an important event for the Wild this weekend which will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The Staples Center will be hosting the NHL Draft and will offer another opportunity for the Wild to add another piece to the puzzle. Analysts predict the Wild will select a forward, a position the Wild could use to help the offense out. Perhaps the Wild will draft another Marian Gaborik, which would be just what Wild fans would like to see. Either way, October 7th will be approaching before we know it and the Wild will be underway for their quest of the cup.

Xcel Energy Center Events Calendar has back to back summer concerts scheduled, causing logistical problems for Xcel Energy Center Events Staff

When it comes to summer concert venues in the Twin Cities, the Xcel Energy Center tops the list this year for great concerts in almost every genre. However, in order to be at the top of the Twin Cities Concert Venues list, it takes some work… work that the Xcel Energy Center Staff is getting prepared for already. Setting up, sound checking and making sure a concert goes well takes lots of behind the scenes work and on June 21st and June 22nd the Xcel Energy Center is going to be doing double duty. The Xcel Energy Center Events Calendar features Sting on June 21st followed up the next night by Tom Petty, meaning that the Xcel Energy Center will have to re-set, re-sound check and basically re-everything in a span of 24 hours. Patrons of the X are confident however that it shouldn’t be a problem for the venue, “The X is awesome, I’ve never had a bad experience there” was the praise one frequent concert attendee had to say. Tickets are still available for the Sting Concert and the Tom Petty Concert, make it worth the Xcel Energy Center Staff’s time and buy concert tickets to sell out both shows!

Heading to a Summer Concert at the Xcel Energy Center, plan ahead to Park near the Xcel Energy Center

Parking ramps like this one can be found near the Xcel Energy Center
Heading to a Summer Concert at the Xcel Energy Center? You will have to plan ahead if you want to park near the Xcel Energy Center. Parking near the Xcel Energy Center is less about getting to the Xcel Energy Center and more about leaving the Xcel Energy Center. Parking near the Xcel Energy Center means parking in city ramps and surface lots, it also means walking. So my advice is, instead of thinking how close to the Xcel Energy Center can I park... think about where you will want to leave downtown St. Paul at. If you are going to drive into St. Paul on W 7th think about parking a little farther away to avoid the traffic after an Xcel Energy Center event. If you are leaving on 94W you may want to park in a parking ramp off of Kellogg. No matter where you are going, parking near the Xcel Energy Center is better if you plan ahead!

Rock-legend Tom Petty is slated to perform at the Xcel Energy Center on June 22nd at 7:30. Tom Petty Tickets have been selling like crazy for this concert proving that whatever the Xcel Energy Center is doing to promote their concerts over the lacking Target Center concert schedule is working.

Over their decades long career, they have released hit songs like: Mary Jane's Last Dance, Won't Back Down, Want it All, and You Don't Know How It Feels. This Tom Petty Concert Tour will promote the band's latest album Mojo.

If you are planning on going to the Tom Petty Concert at the Xcel Energy Center, you better buy your tickets now before they are all sold out!

Looking for something to do while it rains all weekend? Head to the Xcel Energy Center for the Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament

High School Hockey Teams pre-game on the ice at the Xcel Energy Center
The snow may be melting and spring may be right around the corner but Hockey season is still in full swing at the Xcel Energy Center with the Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament this weekend.

The Minnesota High School State Hockey Tournament started on Wednesday with the Class A teams playing quarterfinal games. Class AA played quarterfinals on Thursday. Today both classes play semi-finals. Third place and the Minnesota High School Championship Game will be on Saturday.

Minnesota High School Hockey Tickets are required for all games. Although the Xcel Energy Center has High School Hockey Tickets, they are releasing them just before game time, making the X a very chaotic place to be. A friend of mine, who went on Thursday told me that he went to Ticket King, just a block from the Xcel on 7th Street and purchased Minnesota High School Hockey Tickets with no line and no hassle. If you are planning on coming downtown for the tournament, keep Ticket King in mind!

Looking for Restaurants near the Xcel Energy Center, West 7th Street Area provides lots of great eateries

Street View from W 7th of the Xcel Energy Center
The Xcel Energy Center is host to lots of great sporting, music and theatrical events every week. As the official home of the Minnesota Wild, during the hockey season it seems like there are always people in and around the arena. With the multitude of people who show up on West 7th and Kellogg Street in Saint Paul to attend events at the Xcel Energy Center it may seem like a daunting challenge to find somewhere to eat that won't have you waiting in line for hours and hours...

I would like to suggest a few of my favorite Restaurants near the Xcel Energy Center that always have fast service and great food. The first and obvious choice is the Eagle Street Grill, although the extreme proximity to the Xcel Energy Center can make this bar and grille a bit busy, the food is amazing and there are lots of great drink specials. If you are looking for a lighter option the chef salad there is one of the best in the city.

Another great place to grab a burger and or a brew before attending something on the Xcel Energy Center Event List is McGoverns. McGoverns is located on West 7th just a block away from the Xcel Energy Center.

A third a total local favorite for MN Wild fans who work in the St. Paul area is Cossetta's... a mix salad, pizza, pasta and sandwiches served deli style and Delicious. My personal favorite is the peperoni pizza or the lasagna.

If you are in a hurry, you can always grab arena food inside the Xcel Energy Center and eat in your seat... For wild games I love a big beer and a hotdog with all of the fixings.

No matter which Xcel Energy Center area restaurant you go to, a night in the W 7th Street area is always a good time!
